Systems of author identification

updating
Researcher identifier or Author identifier is a permanent numeric code (permanent unique digital identifier) assigned to a person. This identifier uniquely identifies the researcher in a given digital environment, such as an institutional information system (e.g., an institution's human resource management information system or publication database), a national database (e.g., Polish Scientific Bibliography), an international citation database (e.g., Web of Science, Scopus). It allows unambiguous attribution of an author's scientific achievements.

Electronic systems of author identification:
  • allows for the identification of the scientist, which is especially important when the name is changed, transliterated (e.g., from Cyrillic), and when there are different forms of writing the name in publications;
  • allows verification of data about the scientist, including information about his scientific achievements, units of employment, area of scientific interest and professional cooperation;
  • allows you to properly associate publications with their authors also in the case of authors with the same name and scientific activity in the same disciplines/ research areas.
Some information sources and databases are able to communicate with each other through their system of researcher identifiers and thus exchange, for example, bibliographic data of publications, assigning them to the right author.

Popular systems for identifying scientists

ORCID (nowe okno) – author identification system (free of charge for individuals) created by the American non-profit ORCID institution, supported by scientists, universities and publishers from around the world, who are close to the idea of providing a reliable source of information about scientists, their achievements and affiliated institutions;

Publons (nowe okno) – a system designed as a platform that presents information about publications, citations and reviews by researchers in one place; linked to the Web of Science database, the ORCID system and thousands of scientific journals, so you can automatically import or update publications from a variety of resources, as well as bibliography managers (e.g., EndNote, Mendeley, Zotero).

International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) (nowe okno)– ISO standard, used by numerous libraries, publishers, databases and copyright management applications around the world. It is used to uniquely identify individuals and organizations involved in creative activities. ISNI is an important element in, for example, Linked Data and Semantic Web applications. The ISNI database is completed from multiple data sources around the world and is based on linking using matching algorithms. ISNI identifiers are assigned when there is a high level of confidence that the new names match existing names in the database, or when sufficiently rich metadata is available to determine that the new name does not already exist in the ISNI database.

Scientist's profile

The profile of a researcher or author is a set of data associated with the researcher's identifier in a specific system, supplemented with information added thanks to the tools of this system.

A researcher can have a direct or indirect influence on shaping his profile, depending on how the visible data in that profile is collected and the tools available. In some systems, the researcher can complete the visible data in his or her profile on his/her own, while in others the data is automatically collected from specific sources, and the author can possibly correct it.

Author's profile in the Knowledge Platform of the Cracow University of Technology (new window) (CRIS PK) is created for each author of publications registered in the database. It shows bibliographic data of all the author's publications registered in CRIS PK, including co-authored publications, translations, as well as information about the supervisor of doctoral theses. In addition, the author can include here a photograph and other information at his/her discretion.

Author's profile in Polish Scientific Bibliography PBN (nowe okno) – the PBN portal is part of the POL-on Integrated Information System for Science and Higher Education; currently, information about publications by Polish scientists is available there; they can be viewed after entering the author's name in the search engine on the PBN website (nowe okno).

The author's profile in GoogleScholar (nowe okno) is created on the basis of publications found on the Internet by the GoogleScholar scientific search engine. After verification by the author (e.g., after removing duplicate descriptions), one can analyze the publication output using by Publish or Perish (nowe okno).

Scopus Author Profile (nowe okno)– presentation of information about the author on the Scopus database. The information is generated automatically from the database. Author ID is automatically assigned to an author who has published at least one article indexed on Scopus. The profile is created for authors who have at least 2 publications registered on Scopus. The author can correct the information using the form provided, as well as integrate his/her profile with the ORCID ID.
